For Mark Lally, that realization came while attending Brandeis University and dabbling in landscape design and construction during a summer break.
Instead of heading to law school after graduation, Mark founded Millstone Landscape. He spent more than two decades designing and building custom landscapes throughout the greater Boston suburbs before passing the business to one of his first employees.
Today, Mark works directly with homeowners to design custom outdoor kitchens and outdoor living spaces throughout Central Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire.
Rethinking How Outdoor Kitchens Are Built
As outdoor kitchens grew in popularity, Mark noticed a problem.
Homeowners loved the idea of a custom outdoor kitchen, but many believed it was out of reach. Between the detailed stonework, weeks of on-site construction, and high labor costs, many families assumed they simply couldn’t afford one.
Mark wasn’t convinced it had to be that way.
“It was important to me to find a way to deliver the same level of craftsmanship while making these projects more attainable for homeowners,” says Mark.
That idea led to more than a year of designing, testing, redefining, and developing a completely new building process. Instead of completing nearly all of the work at the customer’s home, Mark moved much of the work into a specialized workshop.
“Today, approximately 90% of every project is built in our shop before we ever arrive at the homeowner’s property,” says Mark. “Working in the shop gives us the time and space to focus on the details. Then, when we arrive at a homeowner’s property, we’re ready to install instead of spending weeks building everything on-site.”
